Arcade Fire Interview

Scott: Hey, it’s Scott Jawson, with the Behringer Podcast station, at the BMF music lounge, Lollapalooza. I’m here with Sarah from Arcade Fire. How’s it goin’?
Sarah: I’m well, thank you.
Scott: Great, how’s your tea?
Sarah: It’s warm.
Scott: That’s good… so what time, when d’you guys get here in Chicago?
Sarah: Oh, we got here last night.
Scott: And you have a show, your show’s later tonight, right?
Sarah: Yeah, we’re playing tonight.
Scott: Cool, what stage is that?
Sarah: Uhm. I don’t know what that stage is called.
Scott: Oh, that’s okay. Is it…..?
Sarah: (laugh) Do you know what it’s called?
Scott: No, I don’t know what it’s called either…[editor's note: Budweiser stage]
Sarah: It’s the, one of the main stages.
Scott: Yeah.
Sarah: Yeah.
Scott: Cool, so, did you guys, are you guys playing in ACL here too, or any other festivals coming up?
Sarah: No, ACL. Not ACL unfortunately. We’re playing Redding and Leeds.
Scott: Oh, man that’s amazing.
Sarah: Yeah.
Scott: Cool.
Sarah: But that’s about it, were not doing tons of festivals this summer.
Scott: Cool, just, are you guys on tour right now, or just..?
Sarah:Yeah, we just put ah, our new album, a few days ago.
Scott: Nice.
Sarah: Yeah.
Scott: What’s it called?
Sarah: It’s called The Suburbs.
Scott: The Suburbs?
Sarah: Aha.
Scott: I like that.
Sarah: Yeah.
Scott: That’s cool. So uhm, is there anything else you guys been doing in Chicago? Are you guys gonna take off after the show this weekend, or you gonna hang out…?
Sarah: Yeah, we’re gonna drive to Nashville tonight, on the bus…
Scott: Nashville? Oh, wow!
Sarah: Yeah, and we’ve never been there before.
Scott: Wow, I was there actually… I met you there, John (another guy from Behringer)…
Sarah: We’re playing at the Ryman Auditorium, which is apparently quite, a beautiful classic venue.
Scott: It seems like a really cool city. Wasn’t Nashville’s under water last year? Didn’t they have like a major flood in Nashville?
Sarah: Sounds like something that would happen in that part of the world.
Scott: Yeah, right? Tennessee, ohh no….
Sarah: I think it’s okay now…
Scott: …not, Tennessee it’s flooding…
Sarah: We have, we have a day off there too…
Scott: Oh, that’s cool…it was a cool place, I had chilled there when I went; it was fun, it’s super beautiful. I don’t know if your heading east from there, or…?
Sarah: From there we’re going to Atlanta.
Scott: Oh, cool, maybe I get the chance to get to the mountains, ’cause it’s so beautiful.
Sarah: It will be overnight.
Scott: Yeah. Ahh…
Sarah: (laugh) We do all of our traveling at night!
Scott: Cool. Well, Sarah thanks for talking to us, really appreciate it…
Sarah: No problem!
Scott: ….hope you have a great show tonight…
Sarah: Thanks. That was painless!
Scott: …enjoy yourself in Chicago?
Sarah: Yeah.
Scott: Alright, take care…

Arcade Fire lyrics - Funeral lyrics - Neighborhood #1

And if the snow buries my,
my neighborhood.
And if my parents are crying
then I'll dig a tunnel
from my window to yours,
yeah a tunnel from my window to yours.
You climb out the chimney
and meet me in the middle,
the middle of town.
And since there's no one else around,
we let our hair grow long
and forget all we used to know,
then our skin gets thicker
from living out in the snow.

You change all the lead
sleepin' in my head,
as the day grows dim
I hear you sing a golden hymn.

Then we tried to name our babies,
but we forgot all the names that,
the names we used to know.
But sometimes, we remember our bedrooms,
and our parent's bedrooms,
and the bedrooms of our friends.
Then we think of our parents,
well what ever happened to them?!

You change all the lead
sleepin' in my head to gold,
as the day grows dim,
I hear you sing a golden hymn,
the song I've been trying to sing.

Purify the colors, purify my mind.
Purify the colors, purify my mind,
and spread the ashes of the colors
over this heart of mine!

        Introduction to Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire is an orchestral indie rock group which shaped in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 2003. The band members are Win Butler (vocals, guitar, piano), Régine Chassagne (vocals, accordion, keyboards, hurdy gurdy, drums), Richard Reed Parry (bass, guitar), William Butler (keyboards, guitar), Tim Kingsbury (bass), Sarah Neufeld (violin), and Jeremy Gara (drums). Howard Bilerman, who played drums on the album Funeral, has since shifted on to other projects. Montreal percussionist Dane Mills did on the EP and in early live shows. As of May 2005, the touring group includes horn player Pietro Amato (who is in Bell Orchestre and Torngat) and violinist Owen Pallett. Pallett has also opened for their shows, appearing as the one-man band Final Fantasy.

The group’s trademark fashion is the waistcoat, giving them an air of “frumpiness”. When asked about the rumour that the group’s name refers to a fire in an arcade, Win Butler replied: “It’s not a rumour, it’s based on a story that someone told me. It’s not an actual event, but one that I took to be real. I would say that it’s probably something that the kid made up, but at the time I believed him.” Win Butler and his brother Will grew up in Texas.
